Irma Newmark

Irma Newmark (born 1927) is an American feminist. She joined New York's division of the National Organization for Women (NOW) in 1967 and served as spokesperson for the committee on the image of women. Newmark was also a founder and the first president of the Bronx chapter of NOW, and a member/speaker for the Association of Feminist Consultants. As such, she testified before the United States Congress at a hearing on women and employment.

In 1975, her article "Women and the Full Employment Society" was published in "The Annals of Political and Social Science." Newmark taught the first women's studies course at Brooklyn College in the City University of New York (CUNY) and was a co-founder of the Women's Center there. She was also a co-founder, with Jacqueline Ceballos and others, of VFA. As a member of the status of women committee of NR (1989 - 1996), Newmark raised issues pertinent to women's needs at the United Nations. She also chaired the caucus on the rights of the child at UNICEF. In 2004 - 2006, she was president of South Palm Beach, Florida Chapter of NOW.

Newmark, who has two children, earned her B.A. from Queens College, CUNY (1970), and her M.A. (1975) and Ph.D. (1983) from the Graduate Center, CUNY.
