Tomboy is a free and open-source desktop notetaking application for Unix-like systems written in C# using Gtk#. It uses a Wiki-like linking system to connect notes together. Tomboy is part of the GNOME desktop environment. Tomboy is often used for personal information management. The main principle is a notepad with a wiki-style interface. There is a main page in which the user puts all links to other pages. Words to pages that are notes automatically become hyperlinks, allowing for the management of large libraries of personal information, such as references to favorite artists that would then automatically be highlighted in e-mails containing their names.

Features

Some of the editing features supported:

* Highlighting text
* Inline spell checking using GtkSpell
* Auto-linking of web and email addresses
* Undo/redo
* Font styling and sizing
* Bulleted lists

Plugins

Tomboy supports several plugins, including:

* Evolution mail links plugin
* Galago/Pidgin presence plugin
* Middle-click on the tray icon to paste clipboard text
* Note of the Day plugin (not installed by default)
* Fixed Width text plugin (not installed by default)
* HTML export plugin
* LaTeX math plugin (not installed by default)
* Print plugin

Windows version

Because Tomboy uses the Mono platform, it is possible to run some older Tomboy releases on a Windows operating system. However, it is still unstable and not all the plugins available on the Linux version appear on Windows. The Tomboy development team is currently working on Windows support for the 0.12 release.
