Watson House (Columbia)

Watson House is a townhouse within Columbia University's East Campus dormitory complex.

History

Watson House was built from 1978 to 1982 during the East Campus construction project at Columbia University. The money for the townhouse was donated by former Chairman and C.E.O. of IBM, Thomas J. Watson Jr. It is a four story townhouse with six bedrooms and large common area.

Over time, the house has become a popular landmark on campus and is noted as one of the most coveted places for rising undergraduate seniors to live. In honor of Watson, the 2006-2007 residents of Watson House opened up a small snack shop called "The Watson Joint" emblematic of Watson's legendary business principles. Also, in 2007, Watson House sponsored the recording of "Girl", an early 90's style R&B song by the official house boy band aptly name Watson House. In the 2008 iteration of the prestigious, university-wide Mario Kart 64 tournament (sponsored by Bwog), three members of the Watson House finished in the top four, including eventual champion Jesse Cooper. In addition, the House has the charge of organizing an annual trip to the Thomas J. Watson's estate in Maine.

Famous residents

Watson House, though only built in the early 1980s, has many notable Columbia Alumni who have lived in its halls. Such alumni include Matthew Fox, Julia Stiles, George Stephanopolous, and Rider Strong.
