Nigel Don MSP (born 16 April 1954) is a Scottish politician. He was the successful SNP candidate for Angus North and Mearns in the 2011 Scottish Parliamentary election. A member of the Scottish National Party (SNP), he was elected by Party List to the Scottish Parliament to represent North East Scotland region at the 2007 election.

Background

He was educated at King's College School, Pembroke College, Cambridge (BA 1975; MEng 2001) and the University of London (LLB).

Nigel's previous jobs include a 13 year career as a chemical engineer with Unilever. He then decided to take time out of working to stay at home and raise his children, which allowed his wife to continue working. He later became a music teacher and a publisher.

Political career

Prior to his election to the Scottish Parliament, Nigel was a councillor for Ninewells ward and SNP Group Convenor on Dundee City Council. He was elected in May 2007 to the multi-member Lochee ward but resigned as councillor on 23 August 2007 to concentrate on his role as MSP.[1]

As an MSP, Nigel was a member of the following Cross-Party Groups:

  • Convenor of the Cross-Party Group on Obesity
  • Vice Convenor of the Cross-Party Group on Construction
  • Member of the Cross-Party Groups on Oil and Gas, Life Sciences, Deaf Awareness and Renewable Energy.

He also served as Parliamentary Liaison Officer (PLO) to Kenny MacAskill MSP, Cabinet Secretary for Justice. The post of PLO is unpaid and is intended to support the Cabinet Secretary in developing and maintaining a positive and constructive relationship between the Scottish Parliament and the Scottish Government.

Nigel was on two parliamentary committees:

  • Public Petitions

His Political Interests include Law, Energy, Nutrition and Weight Management, Environment and Culture

According to his register of interests, Nigel has been and remains a self- employed musician and prior to the election he derived an income of between £10 001 to £15 000 per annum. He was a director of Masterclass Music Ltd which been dissolved and removed from the register of companies. Sales rights to arrangements previously published by Masterclass Music have been transferred to Spartan Press Music Publishers. His earnings are estimated at less than £500 per annum for work he has already undertaken. Nigel is a member of the Performing Right Society which collects royalties on music he has written or arranged. Nigel is also a member of the Mechanical Copyright Protection Society which collects royalties on music he has written or arranged. His estimated income for work he has previously undertaken is less than £500 per annum.

His Interests include Sport and Music and he is a member of the Musicians' Union.
