Tadhg O’Connor (born 1947) is a former Irish sportsperson. He played hurling with his local club Roscrea and with the Tipperary senior inter-county team in the 1970s.

Playing career

Club

O’Connor played his club hurling with his local Roscrea club. He enjoyed much senior success with the club, beginning in 1968 when he won a county championship medal. He won a second county title in 1969, before adding a Munster club title to his collection. O’Connor won a third consecutive county championship medal in 1970. This was later converted into a second consecutive Munster club medal, and a first All-Ireland club medal. He won three further county titles in 1972, 1973 and 1980.

Inter-county

O’Connor first came to prominence in the mid-1960s when he was a key member of the Tipperary under-21 hurling team. In 1967 he won both a Munster and an All-Ireland medal at under-21 level, before later joining the Tipp senior team. O’Connor was appointed captain of the Tipperary senior hurling team in 1971. That year he won his first senior Munster title as well as his first senior All-Ireland medal following a great win over Kilkenny. His performance in the championship earned him his first All-Star award. Tipperary hurling went into decline following this victory. In spite of this O’Connor won a second All-Star in 1973 and a National Hurling League medal in 1979. This league victory was followed by a third All-Star award.
