The '96 season began with a loss to the Chicago Bears in which Emmitt Smith appeared to be seriously injured. Though he would return to the line up quickly, his injury would hamper his effectiveness for the duration of the season. Adding to their difficulties, star receiver Michael Irvin would miss the first few games due to a suspension as a result of a highly publicized violation of the NFL substance abuse policy in the off-season. After losing three of their first four games, the team would return to form and earn its fifth consecutive NFC East title en route to the playoffs. After thoroughly defeating the Minnesota Vikings in the first round of the playoffs, the Cowboys would lose to the second year expansion team Carolina Panthers in a stunning upset of the defending Super Bowl champions. During the season, the Cowboys would defeat former head coach Jimmy Johnson, then head coach of the Miami Dolphins and also see the return of former Cowboy Herschel Walker. Also, Deion Sanders would be the first player in the modern era of the NFL to start a game on both offense and defense. Other notable additions to the team that year include linebacker Randall Godfrey and safety George Teague.Infobox NFL_season
