Media Technology programme at Leiden University

The Media Technology MSc programme at Leiden University is a common initiative of the computer science institute within the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences and the Faculty of Creative and Performing Arts. It is a place where students, artists and researchers are allowed to formulate their own scientific questions. Encouraged to translate personal inspirations and curiosities into their own manageable and compact research projects.

The projects by students most often involve creating actual products: software, hardware, something made from sticky tape perhaps. Because Media Technology are convinced that by doing, making, creating, new insights into the underlying research question are encountered. Resulting findings are published and exhibited at conferences and exhibitions. One might say that Media Technology delivers ‘autonomous scientists’, just as art academies deliver autonomous artists.

The programme recognizes creativity as an important factor in scientific innovation. It aims to be a place where students, artists and scientists do research by creating innovative solutions, inspired by results and principles of science. To achieve this, the curriculum focuses on creative exploration and on the understanding of science and technology.
