Rail transport in Lithuania

Rail transport in Lithuania is operated by state own company Lithuanian Railways ( _lt. Lietuvos Geležinkeliai).

Currently the main railroad network in Lithuania is RailGauge|1520 broad gauge.

There are also few standard gauge lines and convert|158.8|km of RailGauge|750|mm narrow gauge railway lines remaining, although only convert|68.4|km|abbr=on of them (serving five stations) are regularly used, employing 12 locomotives. They are included in the Registry of Immovable Cultural Heritage Sites of Lithuania.

History

The first railroad in Lithuania was built in 1861. It was a part of Saint-Petersburg-Warsaw railroad, and the line lasted from Kaunas to Virbalis
