Winston Churchill High School is part of the North East Independent School District. It is named after Sir Winston Churchill, former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.

The school mascot is the Charger while the school uses the British Union Flag as its symbol, in reference to Winston Churchill's nationality. The Churchill Charger Band and Orchestra is well known and has won many awards. Churchill has also historically had excellent academic and athletics programs.

Athletics

Guided by first-year coach Jerry Comalander, Churchill High went 15-0 and won the 1976 4A state championship in football (the state's largest classification until 1980).

The Churchill Chargers Cross Country team won the District 26-5A championship for the Varsity boys. Paul Snyder, was the top runner for the team and won the individual title for the boys Varsity. This occurred on October 27, 2007 at Brooks City Base in San Antonio. Paul later went on the be runner-up Regional champion and also to place in the top 10 individual runner at the Texas High School state meet in Round Rock, Texas.

The 1982 Churchill High basketball team won the 1982 5A State Championship. The team was coached by Bobby Murphy and his brother, Assistant Coach Danny Murphy. The team ended on a nineteen game winning streak by beating Galveston's Ball High School in the State Championship game.

Sam Cangelosi, 1966 - 1969, was Churchill's first 9 sport letterman. Lettering in Football, Baseballand basketball all 3 years (no freshman class then), Cangelosi was the captain of the Football teamin '68 and the baseball team in '69. He was all district in baseball all 3 years and All-CityHonorable Mention at quarterback in '67. Cangelosi attended Southern Methodist University (SMU) inDallas on a baseball scholarship where he started all 4 years at second base. A career-endinginjury received at Texas A & M his senior year ended his quest to play Major League Baseball.

Fine Arts

Churchill High School is known nationally by its highly successful speech and debate teams -- nine time sweepstakes winners of the National Forensic League's (NFL) National Tournament. The speech and debate teams are respectively coached by Brian Eanes and Karen "Kandi" King.

The founding coach of the Churchill program, Lanny Naeglin, is known nationally as one of the most respected Forensics Coaches at every level of competitive speech and debate. Naeglin, who died of a stroke in 1996, is honored on campus by the schools renovated Lanny Naeglin Theater. Additionally, the National Forensic League has named its Dramatic Interpretation National Award after Mr. Naeglin.

The Churchill Band is known statewide for its drumline and marching abilities, as they are a frequent winner of competitions at the state level. The Churchill colorguard is also nationally recognized for its outstanding performances and high level of skill under the direction of Mike Sloan who also coordinates the drill for marching band during the fall. They are one of two guards in the state of Texas to receive the honor of holding a World Class Colorguard title.

The Churchill Orchestra was selected as one of eight schools nationally to participate in Carnegie Hall's National Band and Orchestra Festival on March 21, 2008.
