Born in
Antrodoco , Federico Tedeschini studied at theseminary inRieti and, together with his fellow theologianEugenio Pacelli , later to bePope Pius XII , at thePontifical Roman Seminary before being ordained to the priesthood onJuly 25 ,1896 . He then served as a seminaryprofessor and canon theologian of thecathedral chapter in Rieti until 1901. Tedeschini was raised to the rank of Privy Chamberlain of His Holiness onNovember 6 ,1903 , and Chancellor of the Secretariat of Briefs in theRoman Curia onOctober 20 ,1908 . Before becomingNuncio toSpain onMarch 31 ,1921 , he was made Substitute, or deputy, of the Secretary of State onSeptember 24 ,1914 .On
April 30 , 1921, Tedeschini was appointed Titular Archbishop of "Naupactus" byPope Benedict XV . He received his episcopal consecration on the followingMay 5 from Pope Benedict himself, with Archbishop Giovanni Nasalli Rocca di Corneliano and BishopAgostino Zampini , OSA, serving as co-consecrators, in theSistine Chapel . During his tenure as nuncio, Tedeschini founded the SpanishCatholic Action . With Spain on the brink of civil war,Pope Pius XI secretly, or "in pectore ", elevated him to theCollege of Cardinals onMarch 13 ,1933 . He was published in theconsistory ofDecember 16 ,1935 , becoming Cardinal Priest of "S. Maria della Vittoria". Tedeschini was named Papal Datary onFebruary 25 ,1938 , and served as a cardinal elector in the 1939 papal conclave that selectedPope Pius XII ,Tedeschini and Pope Pius XII
Pope Pius XII appreciated in his former fellow student " a very special quality of spirit and heart" [Discorsi I, 277] . He appointed him his own successor asArchpriest ofSt. Peter's Basilica onMarch 14 ,1939 . The Italian prelate opted to become Cardinal Bishop of Frascati onApril 28 ,1951 . In 1950,Pius XII gratefully acknowledged the participation of Tedeschini in the preparation of the Dogma of the Assumption of theVirgin Mary and highlighted his role in theApostolic Constitution Munificentissimus Deus [Discorsi, XII, 491] Sharing a special affection for the Virgin Mary, Pope Pius XII asked Cardinal Tedeschini to be his representative at the centennial celebrations inLourdes .
