The fire brigade was created in 1948 under the Fire Services Act 1947. It is one of the few fire services to retain the title "Fire Brigade", the others being London and Cleveland.

For organisational purposes the brigade is divided into Eastern, Central and Western divisions. The service is administered by Cornwall County Council, its headquarters are based in Truro.

Fire stations

Cornwall Fire Brigade operates 31 fire stations, of which 2 are crewed day and night (wholetime), five day crewed (Monday to Friday, 09:00 to 18:00) and the remainder are crewed by retained firefighters who live near to their fire station and can arrive there within five minutes of a call being received. The engineering workshop is located at the back of Camborne fire station and houses a 3 bay main workshop with specalised spray shop, car ramp bay and appliance ramp bay with a dedicated stores and BA maintenance shop. Also on site is a hose shop which tests all pieces of equipment that is carried by the appliances these range from the hoses to Ropes and salvage sheets. The workshop also offers a 365 day engineering support service run by the highly trained mechanics.
