Isidor Philipp

Isidor Philipp (2 September 186320 February 1958) was a French pianist, composer, and distinguished pedagogue. He was born in Budapest and died in Paris.

Biography

Isidor Philipp studied piano under Georges Mathias at the Conservatoire de Paris and won first prize in 1883. Other teachers included Saint-Saëns and Stephen Heller. He returned to the Conservatoire de Paris, where he was a pre-eminent teacher of piano from 1903 to 1934. His students at Paris included the Nobel Laureate Albert Schweitzer. He also taught at the American Conservatory of Fontainbleau. He counted Dwight Anderson, dean of the University of Louisville School of Music from 1932 to 1956, among his pupils. He left France during the Nazi invasion in 1941, after which he taught privately until 1955.

The University of Louisville Isidor Philipp Archive is held at the J.B. Speed Art Museum in Louisville, Kentucky.
