Mir-103/107 microRNA precursor

Mir-103/107 microRNA precursor

The miR-103 microRNA precursor (homologous to miR-107), is a short non-coding RNAgene involved in gene regulation. miR-103 and miR-107 have now been predicted or experimentally confirmed in humancite journal |author=Mourelatos Z, Dostie J, Paushkin S, "et al" |title=miRNPs: a novel class of ribonucleoproteins containing numerous microRNAs |journal=Genes Dev. |volume=16 |issue=6 |pages=720–8 |year=2002 |pmid=11914277 |doi=10.1101/gad.974702] ( [http://microrna.sanger.ac.uk/cgi-bin/sequences/mirna_summary.pl?fam=MIPF0000024 MIPF0000024] ).
microRNAs are transcribed as ~70 nucleotideprecursors and subsequently processed by the Dicer enzyme to givea ~22 nucleotide product. In this case the mature sequence comes fromthe 5' arm of the precursor. The mature products are thought to haveregulatory roles through complementarity to mRNA cite journal |author=Ambros V |title=microRNAs: tiny regulators with great potential |journal=Cell |volume=107 |issue=7 |pages=823–6 |year=2001 |pmid=11779458 |doi=] .
