Southland Mall is a major shopping center in Hayward, California. The two story mall is conveniently located off I-880 at Winton Avenue. It has 2 bus stops: Southland Mall (Bus Stop) and JCPenney Southland Mall Bus Stop.
It currently houses the department stores Sears, Macy's, Mervyn's, JC Penney, Ross and other retailers and also has an underground food court known as the Food Fair with a large TimeOut Arcade.
History
In 1961 a strip mall called Palma Ceia (Portuguese for "Palm Supper") which contain a Lucky's (Closed August 2nd, 2008), Thrifty Drug Store (now a Rite Aid), and more. When Southland was built the Palma Ceia name was dropped.
Southland Mall was built in 1964 with a Sears, Woolworth and JCPenney. A Liberty House (later Emporium Capwell) and a major expansion was built later in the 1970s where Macy's is now.
In 1995 a new Mervyn's Store replacing the original opened at Southland. Later in 1998 Old Navy opened next to Sears. In 2004 Walgreens moved out of Southland. In 2005 the Southland Arches that were red and were painted green. In 2006 Old Navy closed. In January 2007 Mimi's Cafe opened. The Southland bus stop closed in December 2007.
The Lucky Store closed it's doors on August 2nd, 2008 at 3pm.
The mall once had a large elaborate bird cage and an extensive arcade beneath the main floor. It boasted a bumper car attraction.
