Centre for Economic Policy Research

Centre for Economic Policy Research

The Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR), a registered charity founded in 1983, is a network of over 700 researchers based mainly in universities throughout Europe, who collaborate through the centre in research and its dissemination.

Mission

The Centre's mission is to promote research excellence and policy relevance in European economics. CEPR network of over 700 Research Fellows and Affiliates [ [http://www.cepr.org/researchers/resdesc.htm Research Fellows and Affiliates] ] are based in over 237 different institutions in 28 countries (90% in the European Union). Because it draws on such a large network of researchers, CEPR is able to produce a wide range of research that reflects a broad spectrum of individual viewpoints and perspectives.

Contributions to policy debates

CEPR has made contributions to a wide range of European policy issues for over two decades. The 1980s and 1990s, for example, saw the emergence in Europe of new policy issues, which not only reflected significant developments in the European economy, but also posed severe challenges for academic economists and policy-makers:
* the Single Market and the deepening of integration in the real economy
* the "new" EMS, the complete abolition of capital controls and the beginning of the journey towards European Monetary Union
* the emergence of democratic governments on Europe's southern and eastern borders, and the subsequent enlargement of the European Community
* the difficulties of economic transition in Central and Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union
* sustained high unemployment in Europe and the apparent failure of conventional policies to reduce joblessness.

Discussion papers

The Centre disseminates its research in the first instance through the CEPR Discussion Paper Series, in which it publishes almost 700 papers annually.

VoxEU.org

VoxEU.org is an online information policy portal set up by CEPR in conjunction with a consortium of other European sites, including the Italian site [http://www.lavoce.info LaVoce] (which provided inspiration for the idea and help from the start), the French site [http://www.telos-eu.com Telos] , and the Spanish site [http://sociedadabierta.es/ Sociedad Abierta] . Vox aims to enrich the economic policy debate in Europe and beyond.

Vox aims to promote research-based policy analysis and commentary by leading scholars. The intended audience is economists in governments, international organisations, academia and the private sector as well as journalists specializing in economics, finance and business. The main editors are leading European economists including: Richard Baldwin, Tito Boeri, Juan Dolado, Romesh Vaitilingam, and Charles Wyplosz.
