Susquehanna University is a national liberal arts college in Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania, convert|50|mi|km north of the state capital, Harrisburg. Campus

The Susquehanna University campus spans convert|306|acre|km2 in Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania. There are more than 50 buildings on campus, two of which, Selinsgrove Hall and Seibert Hall, are on the National Register of Historic Places. The architecture is primarily Georgian in style.

Students are guaranteed housing all four years and must live on campus their freshman year. 80% of students live on campus with off- campus students comprising some juniors and about half the senior class. Off-campus versus on-campus trends have been changing because each summer Susquehanna builds a residence hall or renovates one.

Music

Susquehanna is traditionally most well known for its music program. [http://www.susqu.edu/music/control.cfm] In addition to students earning a bachelor of arts or bachelor of music in performance or education within the program, minors are offered in music technology, literature, performance and theory. Over 100 students major or minor within the department with approximately 1/4 of the school participating department performance groups.

Outside of the music department, Susquehanna is known for having a small core of on-campus rock bands and singer/songwriters. Volunteer programs

Susquehanna University has a strong reputation for civic engagement in the community with an average of 20,000 hours of service logged every academic year. The Center for Volunteer Programs [http://www.susqu.edu/volunteer] runs a first-year student service event titled SU GIVE, or Get Into Volunteer Experiences, during the fall orientation. Additionally, Susquehanna offers three trips to the Gulf Coast region each year to assist with hurricane relief efforts.

Athletics

Susquehanna competes in 23 varsity sports in Division III of the NCAA as part of the Landmark Conference with other academically prominent Northeastern colleges. Susquehanna competes in the Liberty League for football and the newly-formed Landmark Conference for all other sports besides men's and women's golf (both independents). Cheerleading is Susquehanna's 24th varsity team.

Susquehanna offers 14 intramural sports which are free of charge to all students. Both flag football and basketball league winners advance to national tournaments, where teams have enjoyed success in past years. Students may also join several club sports — including men's and women's rugby, men's ice hockey, ultimate Frisbee, men's volleyball and men's and women's crew — that compete against other colleges.

Environmental health

In 2006 Susquehanna University was the subject of an article in the Harrisburg Patriot-News [http://www.pennlive.com] that drew attention to the efforts of the mother of a former student to understand why a number of recent alumni who have lived off-campus housing contracted and subsequently died of rare cancers. Investigation by various Pennsylvania state agencies indicated no conclusive evidence that the cancers constituted a cluster or could be linked to local environmental conditions.
