Andon Kalchev

Andon Kalchev (1910 Zhuzheltsi, today Greece - 1948, Thessaloniki) was a Bulgarian paramilitary leader active in northern Greece during the country's occupation by the Axis in the Second World War. He was the leader of the Bulgarian-backed Ohrana forces, [ [http://www.makedonskatribuna.com/IMRO.doc] IMRO Militia And Volunteer Battalions Of Southwestern Macedonia, 1943-1944. by Vic Nicholas] a paramilitary formation of pro-Bulgarian Slavophones in Greek Macedonia during Axis occupation, which engaged in fights with rival pro-Greek and pro-Yugoslavian groups.

Kalchev came from an ethnic Bulgarian family who emigrated from Greek Macedonia to Bulgaria after World War I. After education in Sofia and Leipzig (Germany), he studied at a military officer's school in Bulgaria. After the Bulgarian occupation of Greek Thrace and most of Macedonia during World War II, he went back into occupied Greece to found the "Ohrana" paramilitary. After the end of the war he was put on trial as military criminal and was sentenced to death by the Greek military court.
