This is a listing of singles and albums released by French singer Amanda Lear. Lear achieved her greatest international success during the years 1976 and 1983 when she was signed to West German label Ariola Records, including hit singles like "Blood And Honey", "Tomorrow", "Queen Of Chinatown", "Follow Me", "Enigma (Give A Bit Of Mmh To Me)", "Gold", "Fashion Pack (Studio 54)", "The Sphinx", "Diamonds", "Fabulous 'Lover Love Me'", "Ho Fatto L'Amore Con Me", "When", "Solomon Gundie", "Nymphomania", "Égal" and "Fever". The six Ariola albums "I Am A Photograph, Sweet Revenge, Never Trust A Pretty Face, Diamonds For Breakfast, Incognito" and "Tam-Tam" were all released in Continental Europe as well as Scandinavia, Japan, South America and some parts of the former Eastern Bloc - Lear was in fact one of the very few Western artists in the seventies to have her music officially released in the Soviet Union, on state-owned label Melodiya. Albums and singles released as of 1984 - hits compilations not included - have mainly only been available in France, Italy and Germany.

Labels, pressings and back catalogue rights

Amanda Lear's debut single "Trouble", a cover of Elvis Presley's 1958 classic, was initially released on the British market on label Creole Records in 1975. The single passed fairly unnoticed in the UK, Lear did however record a French language version of the track, "La Bagarre", which was released by the French subsidiary of label Polydor Records. "La Bagarre" was initially only a moderate success in France as well, but did gain some attention in West Germany where it entered the singles chart. It was subsequently licensed and re-released by German Polydor in March 1976, with Lear promoting the single on legendary German TV-show Musikladen in May of that same year, which resulted in her being offered a seven year and six albums recording contract by label Ariola Records. "La Bagarre" appeared on the first European editions of 1977 debut album "I Am A Photograph" which also contained her international breakthrough single "Blood And Honey".

Having signed to Ariola Records in West Germany, Lear's material was released internationally beginning with the aforementioned "Blood And Honey" in December of 1976. Following her initial signing to Ariola, various other labels were used to distribute her material in other nations, for example both Polydor, RCA Victor and Ariola in Italy. In other countries like Sweden, the albums and singles were initially imported West German pressings. With Lear achieving mainstream success in Sweden in 1980 with album "Diamonds For Breakfast", reaching #4 on the albums chart in April of that year, the Swedish Ariola distributor CBS Records did however start manufacturing its own pressings of both albums and seven inch singles to meet with public demand. They also issued singles like "When" (1980) and "Nymphomania" (1981), targeted for the Scandinavian market specifically, although these tracks were never A-side releases in West Germany or any other territory - making them highly collectible.

In 1982 Lear took legal action against Ariola-Eurodisc in order to be released from her recording contract on the grounds of artistic differences. The lawsuit was unsuccessful and she remained with the label as stipulated in the original deal until December 31 1983, resulting in single "Incredibilmente Donna" and album "Tam-Tam" being recorded in Italy and double A-side single "Love Your Body"/"Darkness And Light" with Anthony Monn's sound engineer Peter Lüdemann. The relationship between Lear and her former record company was to stay strained all the way into the early 2000s.

Since parting with Ariola-Eurodisc - as of the late eighties a daughter label of BMG-Ariola, eventually absorbed into what is now Sony BMG Music Entertainment - Lear has been signed to the following labels:
* WEA Italiana SpA (1984) for single "Assasino"/"Stato D'allarme". Now a part of Warner Music Group.
* Five Records, Italy (1984-1986). Former Italian label, now defunct.
* Merak Music, Italy (1985). Former Italian label, now defunct.
* Carrere Records/Carrere Disques, France (1986-1990). Now a part of the Warner Music Group. European publishing rights to album "Secret Passion" and worldwide rights to album "Tant Qu'il Y Aura Des Hommes" with the exception of title "Métamorphose" held by Siebenpunkts Verlags GmbH, Germany.
* Virgin Records, Italy (1988) for tracks "Tomorrow (Voulez-Vous Un Rendezvous)" and "Inch Allah Ça Va" with band CCCP Fedeli Alla Linea. Virgin Records is now a sublabel of EMI Music Group.
* Ricordi International, Italy (1989). European publishing rights to eight tracks from album "Uomini Più Uomini" held by Siebenpunkt Verlags GmbH.
* Chène Music, France (1993).
* Giungla Records, Italy (1995). Worldwide publishing rights to track "Everytime You Touch Me" held by Siebenpunkt Verlags.
* ZYX Music, Germany (1995). Owner of Mint Records Germany and Siebenpunkt Verlags, Germany.
* Dig-It International, Italy (1998). Former Italian label, now defunct. Worldwide publishing rights to eleven tracks on album "Back In Your Arms", remixes of 1998 re-recording of "Queen Of Chinatown" and tracks "Mellow Yellow", "They're Coming To Take Me Away Ha-Haaa!" & "C'est Si Bon" held by Siebenpunkt Verlags, Germany.
* EMI Music, France (2000) for Paris Pride re-recording of "Follow Me".
* Caus-N'-ff-ct Records (2000) Sublabel of Sony-BMG, for re-recording of Giorgio Moroder's "From Here To Eternity". Publishing rights held by Siebenpunkt Verlags, Germany.
* Le Marais Prod., France (2001-2002).
* Ice Records, Italy (2002) for track "Cocktail D'Amore".
* Virgin Records, Belgium (2002) Sublabel of EMI Music Group, for duet "Beats Of Love" with Get Ready.
* Sony BMG Italy (2004) for duet "Martini Disease" with band Jetlag.
* Dance Street Music, Germany (2005-2007) Sublabel of ZYX Music/Mint Records/Siebenpunkt Verlags, Germany.

'False' greatest hits compilations

In 1998 Amanda Lear misguidedly decided to re-record nine of her best known songs from the disco era for album/compilation "Back In Your Arms", namely "These Boots Are Made For Walking", "Follow Me", "The Sphinx", "Tomorrow" (2 versions), "Enigma (Give A Bit Of Mmh To Me)", "Queen Of Chinatown", "Fashion Pack (Studio 54)", "Blood And Honey" and "Fabulous Lover Love Me". The album was produced and issued by minor Italian label Dig-It International and only met with limited critical and commercial success on its initial release.

Later that same year German BMG-Ariola re-released "Back In Your Arms" under the title "Amanda '98 - Follow Me Back In My Arms" but chose to replace most of the re-interpretations with the original Ariola versions recorded in the seventies and eighties.

The publishing rights to the ten Dig-It re-recordings were however acquired by German company Siebenpunkt Verlags GmbH [http://www.siebenpunkt.com/index.php?id=586&L=0] , a subsidiary of ZYX Music/Mint Records Germany. The manufacturing rights have then in turn been licensed to a large number of fairly obscure European mid-price labels, such as Jaba Music Switzerland, Edel Music/NAR International Germany, Brioche Edizioni Musicali Italy, Falcon Neuen Medien Germany, Harmony Music Holland, Silver Star Germany, Versailles Music France, Universe Music Germany and Laserlight Digital Germany.

The manufacturing rights to these recordings have on three occasions also been bought by European susidiaries to the Big Four record labels: Warner Music Group Italy, Puzzle Music France - a division of Sony BMG Music Entertainment France, and Carosello - a sublabel of Universal Music Italy.

Consequently, these ten tracks are now regularly being re-packaged and re-released on the European market, usually coupled with less known tracks dating from the eighties and nineties, as being 'Amanda Lear's Greatest Hits' - a truth with modification.

CD titles include "Follow Me - The Greatest Hits", "Divinamanda", "The Queen Is Amanda - Platinum Edition", "I'm a Mistery - The Whole Story", "28 Golden Hits - The Very Best Of - Gold", "Made of Blood and Honey", "Living Legend", "Amanda Lear", "Follow Me (1999)", "Greatest Hits", "Follow Me (2000)", "The Best Of Amanda Lear", "Follow Me (2002)", "Amanda Lear - Follow Me" etc. The 90s versions can also often be found on 'various artists' compilations such as "Disco Magic", "Feten Hits", "Dance Hits Of The 70's", "Dance Hits Of The 80's", "Eurodisco Classics", "Disco Kult" and so on.

While these nine songs indeed are some of Amanda Lear's greatest hits, and performed by her and nobody else - the versions offered on these budget compilations are "not" the million-selling recordings made in Munich in the seventies with producer Anthony Monn but most obviously those from the comparatively unsuccessful "Back In Your Arms" album recorded some twenty years later, a fact that these companies usually fail to mention in their sleeve notes. The original Ariola versions are as a rule only available on albums issued by Sony BMG.

Amanda Lear herself has in several interviews made it clear that she has no control of all these compilations being issued [http://www.eurodancehits.com/learinterviews.html] , [http://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/authors/a/amanda_lear.html] , [http://www.tv.com/amanda-lear/person/576600/summary.html] , and the only career retrospectives to have been released with her approval are 2005's "Forever Glam! - The Best Of 1976-2005" and Sony-BMG's 2006 three disc boxed set "The Sphinx - Das Beste Aus Den Jahren 1976-1983".

In all fairness, these bargain bin CDs do also contain tracks from long-deleted and hard to find albums such as "Secret Passion" and "Uomini Più Uomini" plus the occasional rarity. Even so, if you decide to spend your money on any of these compilations, make sure you do so for the right reasons.
