The college campus is situated at Belgaum-Goa Highway also known as Khanapur Road. Established in 1979 to meet the growing demand for technically trained manpower for industrial growth of the country. The GIT's campus was inaugurated in 1989 by former Union Minister of Defence Mr. Sharad Pawar (present Chairman of BCCI).

Technical departments

Department of Civil Engineering

* Started in 1979, the department offers a 4 year Bachelor Degree Course in Civil Engineering and a Masters Degree Programme with Structural Engineering specialization. The department offers materials testing facilities and technical consultancy services.

* Courses offered: Bachelor of Engineering (Civil Engg) and Master of Technology (Structural Engg)

* Infrastructure: Highway and Concrete Materials Testing Lab, Geo-Technical Engineering Lab, Environmental Engineering Lab, Basic Materials Testing Lab, Hydraulics Lab and Survey and Computational Section

Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering

* The department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering started in 1979. The department conducts a four year Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical and Electronics Engineering degree course affiliated to Visweshwariah Technological University, Belgaum.

* Courses offered: Bachelor of Engineering and MS (by research) - leading to PhD

* Infrastructure: Electrical Machines Laboratories, Electrical Measurement and circuits laboratory, Digital Electronics laboratory, Analog Electronics laboratory, Control systems laboratory, Power Electronics Laboratory (set up under MODROB scheme funded by Central Government of India), High Voltage and Relay Lab, Microprocessors Laboratory, High voltage laboratory, Department Library.

Department of Mechanical Engineering

* Started in 1979, GIT's Mechanical Engineering Department has a faculty strength of 24.

* Courses offered: Bachelor of Engineering, MSc (by research) - leading to PhD, Master of Technology - Computer Integrated Manufacturing

* Infrastructure: FMS-CIM Lab - established in collaboration with MTAB-Denford, CAD/CAM Lab, Design Lab, Heat Transfer Lab, Energy Lab, Fluid Mechanics and Machines Lab, Instrumentation Lab.

Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering

* Started in 2098, the department offers a BE in Electronics and Communication Engineering, MSc (by research) and PhD, affiliated to VTU, Belgaum. The department has a student strength of 366 for undergraduate and 7 PhD candidates.

* Courses offered: Bachelor of introduction for mechanical Master of mechanical (MTech) in Digital mechanical and Networking, MSc (by mechanical ) - leading to PhD

Department of Computer Science and Engineering

* The department was started in 1986. Currently the department has a total intake of 120 students. The department has a well equipped library and state-of-the-art computing facilities.

Department of Information Science

* Department of Information Science and Engineering was started in 2000 and is headed by Sri. M.M. Math.

Department of Industrial and Production Engineering

* Industrial and Production Engineering course, an offshoot of Mechanical Engineering, was started at Gogte Institute of Technology Belgaum in 1984 to meet a growing demand of industries for personnel specialized in the fields of production, industrial engineering and management. The course content of this branch has been planned systematically covering the basics as well as advanced topics in Manufacturing technology, Industrial Engineering and Management and the latest in CAD/CAM, Robotics and Computer applications. The curriculum has been specifically planned to suit the industries as well as business organizations.

* Courses offered: The department offers a Bachelor degree (BE) in Industrial & Production Engineering and Masters degree (MTech) in Production management.

* Infrastructure : Metrology lab, Work Shop, Forging, Foundry and Sand Testing Lab, Machine Shop, Industrial Engineering Lab, Material Science Lab, Foundry and Welding Lab, CAD/CAM LAB, CIM-FMS LAB.

Department of Architecture

* Architecture course was started in 1998. The department offers Bachelor Degree in Architecture approved by Council of Architecture, New Delhi. The department has been offering consultancy services. The Architecture Department has made its impact in Karnataka and also at National Level in NASA and other competitions.

Department of MCA (Master of Computer Applications)

* The Department of Master of Computer Applications was started in 1999. This department imparts the postgraduate degree in computer applications. The department has eleven faculty members. The faculty and student members have memberships in reputed professional societies such as ISTE, CSI.

* Courses offered: Master of Computer Application (VTU affiliated), Java Certification programmer, Oracle certified professional,Red Hat certification course
* Infrastructure: APPLE imac 30 systems, Linux/Oracle/Visual Studio Software Testing Labs

Non-technical departments

Department of Chemistry

* The department started in 1979 to provide basics of Chemistry to undergraduate engineering students. Department is recognised as a Research centre and offers a PhD programme affiliated to Visweswaraya Technological University, Belgaum. All the faculty members are actively involved in academic and research activities and have published a number of research papers in national and international conferences and seminars. The department also undertakes Consultancy and Testing facilities to various industrial units.

Department of Physics

* The Department was started in 1979.

* Infrastructure: Engineering Physics Lab consisting of Solid state lab, Optical lab and Nuclear Physics

Department of Mathematics

* The Department of Mathematics started in 1979. There are seven faculty members, all holding postgraduate degrees, three of whom hold a PhD qualification. The department is recognized as the Research Centre by VTU in the year 2005 to pursue research towards PhD degree in Mathematics. Currently three students are registered in the PhD programme. The faculty is engaged in research in areas such as Spectral Graph theory, Distances and Domination theory and have published research papers in Indian and foreign journals and presented papers at various national and international conferences and seminars. Many of the faculty are members of reputed professional societies such as ISTE, KMA, VTUMTF, ADMA.

Management Departments

Department of MBA

* The Department of MBA which is affiliated to Visvesvaraya Technological University was started in September 2007. The present intake in 60 students. The MBA program comprises four semesters (two years) with specializations in Marketing, Finance, Human Resources, Information Systems, Production and International business. The admission process generally starts after April and students are required to appear for the entrance tests. The Institute's MBA is recognized by AICTE and Government of Karnataka.

Centres of Campus

GIT Computer Centre

Computer Centre caters to the computing needs of the faculty members and the students for their research and teaching. It has a user base of about 2500 with about 600 active users at any given point in time. Computer Centre has a number of state-of-the-art servers like IBM Netfinity, IBM AS 400, Dec Alpha DS10, Compaq Proliant. The Centre also has about 240 Linux and Windows 2000/XP PCs, and 40 engineering Graphics work-stations. All the computers in the centre are connected through a 10/100 Mbit/s network. Computer Centre supports an institute-wide 100 Mbit/s fiber optic network that connects all the Academic Departments, Central Library, Administrative Departments to the Computer Centre. Internet and e-mail services are provided to all the users through a dedicated 2 Mbit/s Internet link. Users can use the computing resources of the institute from their residences by dialing through. Computer Centre operates 12 hours a day. There are 10 well-equipped air-conditioned laboratories categorised in general, according to area of expertise.

Student chapters

IEEE-GIT

* IEEE-GIT is a prolific IEEE student branch in Belgaum. It has participated in many prestigious accolades at local and national levels in various fields. The membership campaign of November 2005 resulted in IEEE Student membership of more than 50 students. A second membership drive of April 2006 raised membership to close to 90 members. IEEE-GIT is now the biggest IEEE Student Branch in North Karnataka.

Linux User Group

* Linux User Group of GIT is one of its kind in Karnataka. The group activities are carried out by faculty and students, mostly involved in organizing guest lectures on Linux based technologies. They have even hosted their own website on GIT server.
