disposition=Nine withdrawn, three in serviceThe Córas Iompair Éireann 181 Class locomotives were built in 1966 by General Motors Electro-Motive Division(EMD) and numbered B181 to B192.

These locomotives were virtually identical to the earlier 141 Class locomotives, but fitted with the more powerful 645 engine and thermostatically controlled engine cooling fan and inlet shutters. Delivery took place in 1966, with introduction into service happening a short time later.

They were fitted with an EMD 8-645E engine of 1000hp [http://emdexport.railfan.net/engine1.html] , weighed convert|67|t|lb, and had a maximum design speed of convert|143|km/h|abbr=on which was restricted to convert|120|km/h|abbr=on in service. Number 186 was later fitted with a EMD 8-567CR engine of convert|875|hp|abbr=on, as used in the 141 Class locomotives.

They are now only used on Permanent Way trains.

Only 185, 187 and 190 remain in service, all others have been withdrawn or scrapped.

The Irish Traction Group has a fund set up for the eventual preservation of a member of this class [http://www.irishtractiongroup.com/funds.htm] .

Model

Murphy Models has commissioned Bachmann to produce an '00' gauge model of these locomotives [http://www.murphymodels.com/Inwork.html] . This model was released in December 2007.
