Egklykada

Egklykada or Egklikada, also Eglykada or Eglikada (Greek: Εγλυκάδα) also with the first a accented is a neighbourhood in the eastern part of the city of Patras, 6 km direct and 7 km via road from the downtown core. Egklykada is accessed with the Patras-Ekilistra Road which is 2 km long in the neighbourhood. Since 2002, it is linked with the Patras Bypass in which it was first constructed in the late-1990s and the interchange later on. Its interchange is circular with only one access from the entrance lane but it does not have any tolls and the intersection is by the entrance and the merging lanes. It is 200 m south of the road and 500 m from its nearest tunnel.

Its origin of the name is a corruption of the name Glykada and it is name since still today are made up of oranges, lemons, etc. The area was entirely rural until the 1960s. It had a sanatorium during the MEdieval Times. It also hads a cypress tree in which it was burnt down by the Turks during the Greek War of Independence of 1821 but it did not lost its battle.

Geography

Its geography is in a hilly setting are filled with agricultural lands and with residential houses around the area. Forests are sporadically founded and several hills lie to the east. Its total area is approximately 2 km², its length is 1 km from north to south, and from east to west. The mountains dominate the northern part. The Panachaiko mountains lies to the east.

History

Between 1996 and 1998, the Patras Bypass was under construction, the bypass did not open until 2002, its interchange was constructed later in the late-1990s.

Panorama

Its panorama includes the Panachaiko mountains to the east, more to the south and southeast including Omplos and Varasova and Arakynthos to the west, it cannot see the mountains to the north because it is blocked by its nearest mountains.

Egklykada has a school, a lyceum (secondary school), a gymnasium (high school), a few churches and a few squares ("plateies")..
