Gungahlin

:"For the Canberra suburb of Gungahlin see: Gungahlin, Australian Capital Territory"

Gungahlin is a northern district of Canberra, Australia. The name Gungahlin, pronounced 'Goongarline', is a regional Aboriginal word meaning "little rocky hill".

Currently comprising nine suburbs, two more are under construction (as at 2008) and a further seven are planned. The population of the district was 31,656 people of the 324,034 people resident in the Australian Capital Territory ( 2006 Census).

Gungahlin is situated to the north of Canberra's city centre, and is located beside Ginninderra Creek that flows into the Molonglo River, which in turn flows into the Murrumbidgee River.'

Gungahlin has a rugby union team named the Gungahlin Eagles.

Gungahlin Drive Extension

Controversially, the Gungahlin Drive Extension (GDE) was completed through the natural forest and open woodlands of Belconnen, running north-south beside the Australian Institute of Sport, joining Gungahlin Drive with the Tuggeranong Parkway (the major north-south freeway through Canberra.)
*Supporters of natural parkland want the road building stopped, and have demonstrated at the ACT Legislative Assembly and by chaining themselves to earthmoving equipment;
*Gungahlin residents were promised the road as part of their district's development, and have protested against the anti-road supporters;
*The ACT Government has determined that the road should be built, and has changed the law to prevent further opposition from community groups.

Although the GDE has been completed, it remains controversial, with the decision by the ACT Government to only build parts of it to 2-lane standard rather than four leaving southbound commuters with lengthy delays each morning.

Community Groups

The Gungahlin Community Council is the peak community representative organisation for the district.
