Great Harwood F.C.

Great Harwood F.C.

Great Harwood F.C. was a football club based in Great Harwood, Lancashire, England. They were founded in the 1880s, and played their football in the Lancashire League, the West Lancashire League, the Lancashire Combination, and latterly the Northern Premier League. Their colours were red and white, and they played their home games at the Showground in Great Harwood.

They had their best years in the late 1960s and early 1970s, but their success was to be shortlived. They gained a place in the Northern Premier League in the 1969-70 season, and at this time had a host of former Football League players including ex-England internationals Ronnie Clayton and Bryan Douglas, and ex-Welsh international Roy Vernon. In the 1970-71 season they reached the FA Cup First Round proper, only to be trounced 6-2 on their own ground by Rotherham United.

A few years later Great Harwood had severe financial problems which forced the club to fold in the 1978 close season. Following their demise, Harwood Wellington became the town's leading football club. They adopted the name Great Harwood Town, and took over residency of the Showground.
