Indianapolis Hoosiers

Indianapolis Hoosiers

Indianapolis Hoosiers can refer to three major league and one minor league baseball clubs based in Indianapolis, Indiana.

American Association Hoosiers

The first Indianapolis Hoosiers were a team who played in the American Association in 1884 and finished in 12th place with a 29-78 record, games behind the first-place New York Metropolitans. Their home games were played at Seventh Street Park in Indianapolis. They were only in operation for one season.

National League Hoosiers

The second edition of the Indianapolis Hoosiers played three consecutive seasons in the National League from 1887 to 1889 and posted records of 37-89 (8th), 50-85 (7th) and 59-75 (7th), respectively. Baseball Hall of Fame member Amos Rusie made his big league debut with the 1889 Hoosiers. Jack Glassock hit for the cycle for the Hoosiers on August 8, 1889.

Western League Hoosiers

These Hoosiers were a minor-league team that was a member of the Western League, predecessor to the American League. This team was contracted when the Western League became the American League in 1901.

Federal League Hoosiers

When the Federal League opened for business in 1914 as a challenger to the two major leagues, one franchise was located in Indianapolis. This third and last major-league Hoosiers team won the Federal League championship in 1914 with an 88-65 record. The next season, the team moved to Newark, New Jersey, in part because of financial problems, and was known as the Newark Peppers, which finished in the 5th place with an 80-72 record. The team played at Federal League Park. Notable players on the Peppers included Cy Falkenberg, and future Baseball Hall of Fame members Edd Roush and Bill McKechnie.
