Tanbūra

Tanbūra

The "tanbūra" is a bowl lyre of the Middle East and East Africa. The instrument probably originated in Upper Egypt and the Sudan.NewGrove2001|Tanbūra|Poché, Christian|xxv|pp. 62-63] The name is derived from the Arabic "tunbur" (طنبور), though this term refers to long-necked lutes (see tanbur). The instrument plays an important role in Zār rituals and "Fann At-Tanbura" in the Arab Gulf states.
