Eutaw is a city in Greene County, Alabama, United States. At the 2000 census the population was 1,878. The city is the county seat of Greene County and was named after the Revolutionary War battle of Eutaw Springs, South Carolina. It is part of the Tuscaloosa, Alabama Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Geography

Eutaw is located at coor dms|32|50|26|N|87|53|21|W|city (32.840680, -87.889037)GR|1.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.6 square miles (11.9 km²), of which, 4.6 square miles (11.8 km²) of it is land and 0.22% is water.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 1,878 people, 778 households, and 504 families residing in the city. The population density was 411.1 people per square mile (158.7/km²). There were 899 housing units at an average density of 196.8/sq mi (76.0/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 33.01% White, 66.03% Black or African American, 0.27% Native American, 0.21% Asian, and 0.48% from two or more races. 0.37% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 778 households out of which 24.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 39.5% were married couples living together, 21.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.1% were non-families. 33.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 15.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.31 and the average family size was 2.95.

In the city the population was spread out with 22.4% under the age of 18, 8.0% from 18 to 24, 22.6% from 25 to 44, 24.4% from 45 to 64, and 22.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females there were 84.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 75.9 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $23,056, and the median income for a family was $32,946. Males had a median income of $30,284 versus $18,869 for females. The per capita income for the city was $14,573. About 24.7% of families and 28.9% of the population were below the poverty line, including 39.4% of those under age 18 and 22.5% of those age 65 or over.

Appearances in Art and Literature

Eutaw, AL is the home town of the protagonist in the Old Crow Medicine Show song "Big Time in the Jungle," released in 2004. The band also released an album in 2001 entitled "Eutaw."
