According to the
U.S. Census Bureau , the city has a total area of 3.2 square miles (8.4 km²), of which, 3.1 square miles (8.1 km²) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.3 km²) of it (4.00%) is water.Demographics
As of the
census GR|2 of 2000, there were 2,728 people, 1,159 households, and 793 families residing in the city. Thepopulation density was 875.4 people per square mile (337.6/km²). There were 1,290 housing units at an average density of 414.0/sq mi (159.6/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 87.76% White, 8.03% Black or African American, 1.43% Native American, 0.11% Asian, 0.37% from other races, and 2.31% from two or more races. 1.32% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.There were 1,159 households out of which 29.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.7% were married couples living together, 13.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.5% were non-families. 29.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.88.
In the city the population was spread out with 24.0% under the age of 18, 8.4% from 18 to 24, 27.1% from 25 to 44, 24.9% from 45 to 64, and 15.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 90.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $28,981, and the median income for a family was $33,712. Males had a median income of $30,685 versus $19,583 for females. The
per capita income for the city was $15,779. About 9.5% of families and 13.4% of the population were below thepoverty line , including 17.4% of those under age 18 and 23.8% of those age 65 or over.References
