Powderfinger's Oi Song Trilogy

The Oi Trilogy is a three-part series of songs by Australian band Powderfinger all featuring the letters "Oi" within the song titles, and each are from consecutive Powderfinger albums. The first song "Oipic" was released on Powderfinger's second album "Double Allergic", released in 1996. The band followed with writing "Capoicity" in 1997 which was released on the 1998 album "Internationalist". The final chapter is entitled "Thrilloilogy" which was on the fourth Powderfinger album "Odyssey Number Five" released in 2000.

Though each of the "Oi" trilogy has no obvious lyrical ties, musically the three are rather similar, though with their varying degrees of pace and dynamic.

The "o" and the "i" in each song title are designed to be pronounced as individual syllables as each song title is more descriptive than having the letters pronounced as "oi" or "oy," meaning that "Oipic" is pronounced "o-ipic," "Capoicity" pronounced "capo-icity" and "Thrilloilogy" is pronounced "Thrillow-ilogy."

Oipic

The 1996 song "Oipic" from "Double Allergic" is an upbeat piece with lyrics by Fanning which talks about the fallacies of the recording and entertainment industry and its fickleness. The line "A new seasons King with a brand new face" from the chorus is to signify the artists and people put into the spotlight or places of prominence very suddenly, only to have the same treatment given to another person very soon after.

Capoicity

The 1998 song "Capoicity" takes its name from the fact that it employs use of a capo, similar to the naming of the song D.A.F.; it was named after the main chords used in the song. The song is the slow movement of the trilogy, and talks about sheltering oneself from the issues of the world, in similar context to "Oipic," except more about avoiding the world "Oipic" describes.

Thrilloilogy

"Thrilloilogy," the last part of the trilogy, takes its name from merging the words "trilogy," "thrill" and the series' signature "oi" inclusion. The is an upbeat rock song, making it the playful closing piece. Its link to the first two songs is weaker, there is no clear connection in the somewhat vague lyric. "Thrilloilogy" is the only song of the trilogy to be featured on Powderfinger's greatest hits album ' released in 2004 and was also performed live and featured on the live concert CD and DVD releases ' also released in 2004, as well as the "Across the Geat Divide tour" DVD in 2007.
