Character background

"General Hospital" writers brought the character of Elizabeth Webber to Port Charles at the age of fourteen. She is the granddaughter of Dr. Steve Hardy, one of "General Hospital"'s original characters, and the daughter of Dr. Jeff Webber. She is said to have lived in Boulder, Colorado with her parents (unnamed mother) and her older sister, Sarah Webber. While growing up in Boulder, Elizabeth said that she never received as much attention as her sister did and always rebelled and got into trouble. Her parents ended up moving to Russia to work as doctors there, leaving Elizabeth no choice but to go to her grandmother's house in Port Charles, New York.

Lucky and Elizabeth

A young and rebellious Elizabeth blew into Port Charles, landing on her step-grandmother Audrey's doorstep unannounced, in August 1997. She instantly developed a crush on Lucky Spencer. However, Lucky had his own crush on her sister, Sarah.

On Valentine's Day 1998, instead of going to the school dance,Elizabeth went to the movies and was later walking in the park on her way home when she was grabbed from behind, taken to the bushes, and raped. Lucky found Elizabeth after the attack while he was walking though the park as well and took her home, and the Spencer family helped her through her ordeal. This incident led to the revelation to Lucky that his father, Luke, had raped his mother, Laura, almost twenty years before. Lucky left home, moving in with Liz for a short while, before camping out in a boxcar and eventually moving into his own one-room apartment.

Liz and Lucky became close to Emily Quartermaine and Nikolas Cassadine. She and Lucky struggled through their teen years and fell in love. Then tragedy struck. In April 1999, the motorcycle shop which housed Lucky's apartment burst into flames. Lucky was presumed dead, and Liz was grief-stricken. Over the next several months, Liz became close friends with Jason Morgan, who helped her deal with the loss of her first love.

In 2000, Luke and Laura discovered that Lucky was alive. He had been held captive by Helena Cassadine and brainwashed into believing that he did not love Elizabeth. Lucky went on pretending to love Elizabeth to make her happy because he still cared about her, and they became engaged. On their wedding day, Elizabeth figured out just moments before the vows that Lucky did not really love her and she called off the wedding and Lucky and Elizabeth parted ways, but stayed close friends.

In 2005, Lucky and Elizabeth started their romance back again after Elizabeth became a nurse at General Hospital and had a son with Zander Smith, Cameron Webber. Before Lucky and Elizabeth married, Elizabeth chose to become a surrogate mother for Jasper Jacks and his wife at the time, Courtney Matthews who thought that she couldn't have children. Lucky did not like that she was carrying another man's baby and the two argued about it constantly before Lucky decided to move out of the apartment that they shared and take a break from the relationship. After a car accident with Jax, Elizabeth miscarried the baby and Lucky helped her through the pain and guilt that she felt. They reunited and married.

Their marriage was rocky, especially after Lucky became addicted to painkillers. In 2006, Lucky began an affair with Maxie Jones, who supplied him with pills. Elizabeth caught Lucky in bed with Maxie and sought comfort from Jason Morgan, whom she slept with. Elizabeth became pregnant. Lucky, believing the baby was his, went to rehab while he and Elizabeth divorced. A paternity test revealed that Jason fathered her unborn baby. Elizabeth kept the truth a secret to protect the child from Jason's dangerous lifestyle and to keep Lucky from suffering devastation that she believed would cause him to relapse.

After Lucky completed rehab, Elizabeth and Lucky remarried. In 2007, Elizabeth gave birth to another son, Jacob Spencer. Elizabeth sought Jason during tragedy. Lucky was jealous and began an affair with Sam McCall. Elizabeth and Lucky divorced again. Jason told Lucky the truth about Jake's paternity, but Lucky agreed to Jason and Elizabeth's wishes to keep the truth a secret to protect their son.

Lucky and Elizabeth are on good terms and maintaining the charade that he is the father of her children.

Ric and Elizabeth

When Ric Lansing came to town, he became attracted to Elizabeth, who was a waitress at Kelly's and Ric lived upstairs. When Ric found out Elizabeth's connections to Sonny and his enforcer, Jason Morgan (Elizabeth was friends with them and dated Jason), he decided to get close to her for information on them to destroy them (Sonny is Ric's half-brother, and they hate each other). Ric used Elizabeth's anger toward Jason for their break-up to try and take down Sonny and Jason, unknowingly to Elizabeth. Ric ended up falling in love with Elizabeth and conceived a child with her.

Ric and Elizabeth were married in 2003. Elizabeth was pregnant with Ric's baby but miscarried when she was pushed on the stairs by Ric's former lover, Faith Rosco. Ric kidnapped Carly Corinthos, his pregnant sister-in-law, and Elizabeth found Carly in the panic room where Ric was hiding her. Ric and Elizabeth divorced, but later re-married when she was pregnant with Cameron. Cameron was Zander's child, but Zander wanted no part in the baby's life and Ric wanted to be a father to her child, so she married Ric. Elizabeth divorced him soon after the marriage because of his lies and obsession with ruining Sonny's life.

Zander and Elizabeth

Elizabeth and Zander became good friends when in 2002 after her best friend and his former love, Emily Quartermaine left town. In 2002, while Elizabeth was upset about her kidnapping and Jason Morgan ending their friendship, she turned to Zander and they slept together, but their relationship did not go past that. In 2003, after divorcing their spouses (Ric and Emily) she and Zander had a one-night-stand during which she conceived their son Cameron, whom she named after Zander's father in compliance with Zander's wishes. Zander died when he was shot for his rage and kidnapping of Emily Bowen-Quartermaine before Cameron was born.

Jason and Elizabeth

Elizabeth first became involved with Jason after she treated him for a gunshot wound in 1999. While Jason was recovering, he stayed in Elizabeth's art studio. They became close friends and even pretended to be lovers so no one would know that he was hurt and that that was the real reason to why he was living with her. Jason left town in early 2000 and when he came back later that year, Lucky had been discovered alive. Jason began to develop feelings for Elizabeth, and Elizabeth returned them. When Jason asked her to go away with him, she said she wanted to stay with Lucky. Jason came back a year later to find that Liz and Lucky were no longer together. In 2002, Jason and Liz began dating, but Elizabeth was kidnapped by Jason's enemies and Jason rescued her. Jason pushed her away to protect her from his "dangerous life". Liz turned to her friend Zander Smith one night when she was upset about the kidnapping and Jason calling off their friendship and they had sex. Zander and Elizabeth moved in with Jason for protection from Jason's enemies. Jason and Elizabeth finally admitted to each other that they wanted to be together. Liz ended things with Jason when she found out he lied to her about Sonny's "death." Jason eventually married Courtney Matthews, Sonny's half-sister. For nearly a year, Jason and Elizabeth never spoke to each other except when they were fighting over Ric (her husband at the time) and Courtney. They became friends again later on, but not as close as they once were.

After Elizabeth was kidnapped again by Manny Ruiz in spring of 2006, Jason rescued her once again, starting their close friendship back up again that spring and summer. Both Jason and Elizabeth were in failing relationships, and the two slept together. Elizabeth conceived a child with Jason, but hid the truth until the hostage crisis at the Metro Court in 2007. In May 2007, Elizabeth gave birth to Jacob Martin Spencer.

In November 2007, during the Black and White Ball, Lucky discovered the truth about Jake's paternity and agreed to keep the paternity a secret for Jake's safety. After Emily Quartermaine's death and funeral, Jason and Elizabeth began a secret relationship. They have stated their love for each other, but keep their feelings a secret to protect Elizabeth and Jake from Jason's enemies. In April 2008, Liz and Jason became engaged. However, the engagement was shortlived due to Jason's nephew, Michael, being shot. Jason decided that his job was too dangerous for Elizabeth and her children, and he called off their relationship.

Elizabeth decided to fight to be in Jason's life. She asked him to allow their relationship to continue in secret, but he was adamant that he cannot give her what she deserves. Jason recently gave in to his feelings for Elizabeth, and they were discovered about to make love by his friend, Carly Jacks. Jason invited Elizabeth to go with him on a trip to Italy. After Jason witnessed the shooting of Sonny's fiancee, Kate Howard at their wedding, the trip was cancelled. Jason, once again fearing for Elizabeth's safety, tried to use this incident to scare her into abandoning the idea of being with him. Elizabeth is not convinced.
