Catalan Parliament election, 2003

Elections to the Parliament of the Autonomous Community of Catalonia, Spain, were held on November 16, 2003.

Background

Afterwards of 23 years of a Convergence and Union government, this elections expected a big change in a Catalonia Government.

In the past 1999 elections, Convergence and Union lost the elections, but in the parliament voting it was won, because the People's Party of Catalonia supported it.

In the 1999 elections Initiative for Catalonia Greens and United and Alternative Left were have to run separately, but in this elections be formed a party coalition.

Parties

* CiU (Convergence and Union). Presidential candidate: Artur Mas. Union of the Catalan nationalist, fiscally liberal Democratic Convergence of Catalonia and the conservative Democratic Union of Catalonia.

* PSC-CpC (Socialists' Party of Catalonia-Citizens for Change). Presidential candidate: Pasqual Maragall i Mira. Social democratic. Affiliated to the Spanish Socialist Party, (PSOE).

* ERC (Republican Left of Catalonia). Presidential candidate: Josep-Lluís Carod-Rovira. Catalan republican and independentist, left-wing.

* PPC (People's Party of Catalonia). Presidential candidate: Josep Piqué. The main party of the centre-right in Spain.

* ICV-EUiA (Green Initiative for Catalonia-Left United Alternative). Presidential candidate: Joan Saura. Green (eco-socialist) and radical left.
