Shane O’Neill (born 1986 in Bishopstown, Cork) is an Irish sportsperson. He plays hurling with his local club Bishopstown and is also a member of the Cork senior inter-county team.

Playing career

Club

O’Neill plays hurling with his local club Bishopstown and has enjoyed much success. He has won two county minor titles and one under-21 title. In 2006 O’Neill played a key role at half-back when his club won the Cork Intermediate Hurling Championship. This victory allowed Bishopstown to secure promotion to the senior grade for 2007.

Inter-county

O’Neill first came to prominence on the inter-county scene in 2004. That year he tasted his first success with Cork as he captured a Munster minor title. In the subsequent All-Ireland semi-final against Galway he excelled during an otherwise poor display for Cork which resulted in a defeat. By 2005 O’Neill had joined the Cork under-21 hurling team. That year he won a Munster title in that grade, however, success in the All-Ireland series proved elusive. Two years later in 2007 O'Neill was appointed captain of the Cork under-21 hurling team. He added a second Munster medal to his collection that year, however, Cork were later defeated by Galway in the All-Ireland final.

As a result of Diarmuid O'Sullivan's suspension for the 2007 Munster semi-final with Waterford, O'Neill was charged with the task of filling in as the full-back on the team. He gave a good display on that ocacsion and has made a numbe rof appearances for Cork since then. In 2008 O'Neill became a regular on the starting fifteen ain the right corner-back position. His style of play has been described as "quietly effective" [ [http://www.southernstar.ie/article.php?id=625 The Southern Star Newspaper - Co Cork, Ireland ] ] [ [http://www.examiner.ie/story/sport/ojqlkfojsn/rss2/ Irish Examiner | Irish News | News from Ireland ] ]
