Calwell is a medium sized suburb in the Australian Capital Territory. Tuggeranong Hill is on its southern border and it adjoins the suburbs of Theodore to the south, Richardson and Isabella Plains to the north. The Tuggeranong Homestead is to the north. On the eastern border is the Monaro Highway taking commuters to the Canberra city centre and from Canberra to Cooma.

History

The suburb was named after the Labor politician, the Right Honourable Arthur Augustus Calwell, PC, (1896-1973). The name was gazetted 5 August 1975.

Streets in the suburb are named in accordance with the theme of Victorian politicians.

Calwell Centre

The Calwell Centre is a designated group centre located on Webber Crescent in the north of the suburb. The centre was developed in the early 1990s to serve Calwell, Richardson, Theodore and Isabella Plains. Prior to the development of the Lanyon Market Place in the late 1990s, the Calwell Centre also serviced Conder, Banks, and Gordon, . Among the retail and service outlets are a Woolworths supermarket, Caltex service station, tavern, Chinese restaurant and several other businesses. Churches

Corpus Christi Catholic Parish, based in Gowrie, runs services in the hall at St Francis of Assisi Primary School.

Transport

Calwell is serviced by several ACTION bus routes. Routes 312 and 315 run every 20-60 minutes from 6:30 a.m. to 6:00 and 7:00 p.m. respectively between the Theodore Terminus and the Spence Terminus or Belconnen Interchange. Route 12 runs between the Tuggeranong Interchange and the Theodore Terminus from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Route 15 also runs between the Tuggeranong Interchange and the Theodore Terminus or the Calwell Group Centre in the morning and evening. Route 769 runs from Theodore to City West in the morning peak hour and from City West to Theodore in the evening peak hour. Flexibus Service 969, which must be pre-booked before riding, runs a loop from Tuggeranong Interchange every hour from 9:40 p.m. to 11:40 p.m. [ACTION Buses (2006) [http://www.action.act.gov.au/ ACTION Buses] , retrieved 30 July 2006 ] Canberra Cabs and Queanbeyan taxis also service Calwell.
