Elza Jeffords

Elza Jeffords (May 23, 1826 - March 19, 1885) was a U.S. Representative from Mississippi.

Born in Ironton, Ohio, Jeffords attended the common schools in Portsmouth, Ohio.He studied law.He was admitted to the bar in 1847 and commenced practice in Portsmouth, Ohio.During the American Civil War, he served in the Army of the Tennessee from June 1862 to December 1863 as clerk in the Quartermaster's Department.He served as judge of the high court of errors and appeals in Mississippi 1868 and 1869.He served as delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1872.

Jeffords was elected as a Republican to the Forty-eighth Congress (March 4, 1883-March 3, 1885).He was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1884.He died in Vicksburg, Mississippi, on March 19, 1885.He was interred in Cedar Hill Cemetery, near Vicksburg.
