Speaker of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly

Speaker of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly

The Speaker of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly is the presiding officer of the lower house of the Parliament of New South Wales. The role of Speaker has traditionally been a partisan office, filled by the governing party of the time. The incumbent Speaker is an exception, however; prominent independent MLA Richard Torbay was appointed to the role by Australian Labor Party Premier Morris Iemma after the 2007 state election.
