History

Matsuda Station was opened on February 1, 1889 on the Japan National Railways (JNR) line linking Kōzu Station and Shizuoka Station. It was designated a station of the Tōkaidō Main Line on November 12, 1909. However, with the opening of the Tanna Tunnel it was designated a station on the Gotemba Line from December 1, 1934. In October 1955 a spur line connecting the station and Shin-Matsuda Station was built.

Freight services were discontinued on November 15, 1982 and small parcel services from February 1, 1984. On April 1, 1987 along with privatization and division of JNR, the station came under control of the Central Japan Railway Company. On October 1, 1994, a freight terminal of the Japan Freight Railway Company was opened and freight services were resumed.
