Weston-on-the-Green

Weston-on-the-Green is a small village in Oxfordshire which has thatched cottages, a church, a manor (now a hotel) and a hall. There are two pubs. The Chequers and the other is named after Ben Jonson. It is said that the "pub is named after him as he was well known for stopping here ... on his way to Stratford upon Avon to visit his friend William Shakespeare".

Nearby is RAF Weston-on-the-Green. The village is under threat from a proposed eco-town called Weston Otmoor.

History

The Church of Saint Mary's dates from the twelfth century.

The village had no electricity until 1931 and school had none till 1947. The school has now closed. [http://www.wotg.org.uk/Hallweb/Links_page.htm Weston on the Greens Village Hall web site] ]
