Along the valley of the Orange River, the river creates a cool microclimate that traditionally has favoured white wines. A lot of Colombard is grown.

This area was little visited by Europeans until diamonds were found at Kimberley in 1866. Traditionally the Orange River has grown table grapes, being home to most of the national sultana crop. However more interest is being shown in wine.

Wine of Origin

It has been designated as a Wine of Origin under the classification scheme of South African wine.
