History

The station launched in 1984 as a closed circuit station, available only in certain locations on campus. In 1986, the station was added to cable FM service in Sudbury, using the informal callsign CFLR.

In 1996, the station applied to the CRTC for an FM license. The application was granted, and the station began broadcasting over the airwaves in 1997. [ [http://www.crtc.gc.ca/archive/ENG/Decisions/1996/DB96-619.HTM Decision CRTC 96-619] ] The station was not able to retain the CFLR callsign, due to the existence of another CFLR broadcasting in La Romaine, Quebec.

The station added Internet streaming to its website in September of 2008. [ [http://www.sudbury24.ca/media/1934/CKLU_Now_Available_On-Line/ "CKLU Now Available Online"] , Persona News 10, September 23, 2008.]

A short-run science series, "Sudbury Knows No Bounds", is scheduled to air later in 2008 in conjunction with Science North.
