Montserrat is a neighbourhood located in the east of the Buenos Aires Autonomous city. The district features some of the most important buildings in Buenos Aires, these include city hall, the city legislature, Buenos Aires Cabildo, Casa Rosada, the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Cathedral, the Colegio Nacional de Buenos Aires, the Libertador Building (Ministry of Defense) and the National Bank of Argentina.

Avenida de Mayo runs through the Monserrat district, it is one of the most famous streets in Argentina, connecting Plaza de Mayo and the Plaza de los Dos Congresos (Congressional Plaza).

A block, or two, south of the Plaza de Mayo, the older section of Montserrat begins. This is Buenos Aires' oldest neighborhood and even today, very little of the cityscape there is less than a hundred years old (except along Belgrano Avenue), thereby making a nearly seamless transition to the likewise historic San Telmo district, to the south.

In this area, the Jesuits have maintained the Temple of St. Ignatius since 1734 and, during colonial times, the finest school and library in Buenos Aires. Offering colonial Buenos Aires' only truly classical education there, their property was popularly known as the "."

The barrio is also home to the art-deco NH City Hotel (off the Plaza de Mayo) and the modern, high-rise InterContinental Hotel, on the corner of Moreno and Piedras streets.
