Juhel of Totnes

Juhel of Totnes [Judel, Judhel, Judael, Judhael, Joel of Totnes, Judhel de Totenais, Judhellus filius Aluredi, Juhel fitz Alfred, Juhel de Mayenne.] was a Breton nobleman and supporter of William I of England of the eleventh century.

Life

He was in 1069 one of the leaders of Breton forces on the Norman side, fighting against the remaining forces that had been loyal to Harold II of England [E. M. R. Ditmas, "Reappraisal of Geoffrey of Monmouth's Allusions to Cornwall", Speculum, Vol. 48, No. 3 (Jul., 1973), pp. 510-524.] He was Lord of Totnes, and holder of many manors in south-west England, at the time of the Domesday Survey (1086) [For example Clawton [http://www.wayne.may.btinternet.co.uk/clawton.html] , Broadwood Kelly [http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.asp?compid=50570] , Bridford [http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.asp?compid=50569] , Cornworthy [http://193.39.212.223/report.asp?compid=50573] .] . He was however dispossessed or pushed out of Totnes shortly afterward. According to Frank Barlow ["William Rufus" (1983), p. 171.] William II of England

:"replaced the Breton Judhel, whom he expelled from Totnes at the beginning of his reign for an unknown reason, with his favourite, Roger (I) of Nonant".

Family

His daughter Aenor married Philip de Braose [ [http://www.thepeerage.com/p63.htm#i630] , [http://freespace.virgin.net/doug.thompson/BraoseWeb/family/philip.html] ] , son of William de Braose, 1st Lord of Bramber.
