The GSV Bora Horza Gobuchul is a General Systems Vehicle belonging to the fictional society The Culture. It appears in the novel "Consider Phlebas" and is named after another character in that novel, the changer Bora Horza Gobuchul (Horza).

History

The Mind is produced early during the Idiran-Culture War. The factory craft that produces it is under threat of attack and pressed for time, so the Mind's original ship is a hodge-podge of components scraped together to give the Mind a chance to escape. This craft travels safely for some time through Idiran space, but before it can reach Culture space it is attacked by an Idiran fleet. The vessel is destroyed, but the Mind manages to escape to a nearby planet. "Schar's World" is a 'Planet of the Dead', a world designated as a memorial to death by the Dra'Azon, one of the Sublimed civilisations. The planet's guardians also destroy the Idiran military force sent in to capture the Mind.

Undaunted, the Idirans send their operative Bora Horza Gobuchul, a former caretaker of Schar's World, to find and recover the Mind. Accompanied by a captured Culture agent, Perosteck Balveda, and a small band of pirates whose ship he has taken over, Horza is able to retrieve the Mind from a system of tunnels beneath the surface of the planet. However, in the process, Horza loses his life and, contrary to his aims, the Mind is rescued by the Culture.

After its recovery from Schar's World, the Mind is repaired and refitted aboard the GSV "No More Mr. Nice Guy". The Mind, having adopted the name "Bora Horza Gobuchul", is subsequently installed into an Ocean Class GSV and participates in many important battles during the Idiran War. After the conflict, it is moved to a Range Class GSV.
