Allan Sekula

Allan Sekula

Allan Sekula (born Erie, Pennsylvania, 1951) is an American artist, writer, and critic based at The California Institute of the Arts.

Overview

His principal medium is photography, which he employs to create exhibitions, books, and films. His secondary medium is the written word, employing essays and other critical texts in concert with images to create a multi-level critique of contemporary late capitalism. His works make critical contributions on questions of social reality and globalization, and focus on what he describes as "the imaginary and material geographies of the advanced capitalist world" and are the result of extensive research and travel.

Sekula is the recipient of fellowships from the [http://www.gf.org/] Guggenheim Foundation, the [http://www.nea.gov/] NEA, the [http://www.getty.edu/research] Getty Research Institute, the [http://www.daad.de] Deutsche Akademischer Austausdienst and the Atelier Calder.
Allan Sekula was named a 2007 USA Broad Fellow and granted $50,000 by United States Artists, an arts advocacy foundation dedicated to the support and promotion of America's top living artists.
Sekula is on the faculty of the Program in Photography and Media at the [http://www.calarts.edu] California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) in Valencia, California.
