Alex Cross has a new girlfriend, Brianna Stone, who is also a detective in the police force. Each murder becomes increasingly complex and expands the audience to the murders. The killers ‘modus operandi’ is that he adores an audience to his murders. Throughout the story the murderer is referred to as DCAK, short for “The Washington DC Audience Killer”.

Release details

The novel begins with serial killer Kyle Craig, a former FBI agent. The next chapter follows Kyle in prison, where he is visited by his lawyer/fan, with whom he plans his escape. Back in Washington D.C., a man plans the murder of crime reporter Tess Olsen, whom he kills before an audience. Alex Cross is at home with his girlfriend, Bree, when they receive a call about the murder. Though he is no longer a member of the force, Alex insists that he be allowed to accompany her to the scene, and she begrudgingly allows it. When they arrive, Bree tells him to stay in the car. After some time Alex feels he cannot simply stand by, and joins Bree and Sampson in the victim's apartment. They find a recording of Tess' murder, at the end of which Cross' name is mentioned, sucking him into the case. During the investigation, Alex is informed that Kyle Craig, the "Mastermind", has escaped from prison in the guise of his lawyer. At the same time, his lawyer had donned his client's appearance, returning to the cell in his place, where he committed suicide. Alex must now hunt down both the audience killer and the Mastermind.
