Pasang Lhamu Sherpa

Pasang Lhamu Sherpa

Pasang Lhamu Sherpa was the first Nepali woman to climb the summit of Mount Everest. She was born into a mountaineering family and was involved in climbing from her teens. She had successfully climbed Mont Blanc, Cho Oyu, and others. She had attempted Everest three times before, but did not succeed until April 22, 1993 when she reached the summit by the South Col via the Southeast Ridge route. While she was descending with her husband, Sonam Chhiring, she fell into a crevasse and died. Even though she had fallen, her soul and what the deeds she had done are still remembered by all Nepalese men and women today.

She was posthumously decorated with the "Nepal Tara (Star)" by His Majesty the King of Nepal, and commemorated with a life-size statue and a postage stamp. In addition, the government of Nepal renamed a road, a strain of wheat and a mountain in the Mahalangur Range in her honor.
