Stockport Tiviot Dale railway station

Stockport Tiviot Dale railway station

Stockport Tiviot Dale was one of two main railway stations serving the town of Stockport, the other being Stockport Edgeley (now simply referred to as Stockport). It was located on the Cheshire Lines Committee(CLC) operated Stockport, Timperley and Altrincham Junction Railway from Portwood to Skelton Junction section of what became the Woodley to Glazebrook line, and was situated at the bottom of Lancashire Hill, next to the present motorway bridge. It was opened on the 1 December 1865, and was originally known as Stockport Teviot Dale [http://www.subbrit.org.uk/sb-sites/stations/s/stockport_tiviot_dale/index.shtml] . Tiviot Dale remained a part of the CLC, and later the London Midland and Scottish Railway, until 1948 when it became part of the British Railways London Midland Region. The station eventually closed on 2 January 1967, but the lines surrounding the entrance to the station were left in place until 1982 when, due to damage caused to an approach tunnel when the M63 motorway (Now M60 motorway) was built, the track was lifted in 1986. The area surrounding the station was further altered at the beginning of the 21st century to allow the construction the Tesco Extra superstore in Portwood.
