Singapore National Youth Orchestra

The Singapore National Youth Orchestra (SNYO) is a youth orchestra under the purview of the Co-Curricular Activities Branch, Education Programmes Division, Ministry of Education. Members of the SNYO come from primary and secondary schools, junior colleges, international schools and tertiary institutions in Singapore. The current music director is Lim Soon Lee, a Singaporean conductor and violist.

The stated aim of the SNYO is to "provide each student exemplary orchestral experience and the highest quality professional music education and training, as part of the holistic approach to our education system – to inspire and nurture career-minded musicians, enthusiastic amateurs and dedicated music-lovers".

On 30 March, 2007 SNYO launched the inaugural SNYO International Artistes Series (IAS) with the first guest artiste, internationally acclaimed violin virtuoso, Li Chuanyun. The IAS is a progression from the Orchestra’s earlier Music Mentor Programme, which ran from 2004 to 2006.

In addition to the 3 public concerts presented by the Main Orchestra, the Training Orchestra presents Music Education Outreach concerts through public concerts in May and November.

To encouraged the creative composition skills among musicians, SNYO holds its annual competition of the Dr Tay Eng Soon Young Composers’ Competition. The works of the top prize winners are then performed at the SNYO Chamber Music Concert.
