Samuel S. Barney

Samuel Stebbins Barney (January 31, 1846 - December 31, 1919) was a U.S. Representative from Wisconsin.

Born in Hartford, Wisconsin, Barney attended the public schools and Lombard College, Galesburg, Illinois. He taught in the high school at Hartford for four years.He studied law in West Bend, Wisconsin.He was admitted to the bar in 1873 and commenced practice in West Bend.Barney served as Superintendent of schools of Washington County 1876-1880, then returned to private practice.He served as delegate to the Republican National Convention at Chicago in 1884.He was an unsuccessful candidate for election in 1884 to the Forty-ninth Congress.

Barney was elected as a Republican to the Fifty-fourth Congress and to the three succeeding Congresses (March 4, 1895-March 3, 1903). He was not a candidate for renomination in 1902.

President Theodore Roosevelt appointed him associate justice of the United States Court of Claims, Washington, D.C., in 1904. He served until 1919. He died in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, December 31, 1919 and was interred in Union Cemetery, West Bend, Wisconsin.
