Dankook University is a private university in South Korea. Dankook University has been constantly recognized as one of top universities in Asia ranked 148th in Asia by QS Asian Universities Ranking in 2010. [1]

The main campus was moved from Seoul to Yongin in 2007 and boasts technologically advanced classrooms, high-end facilities, ample dorm space and one of Korea's most aesthetically beautiful university campuses[citation needed]. Most of the original Seoul campus has been sold, but some graduate programs, recruiting programs, language programs and outreach programs are available in the remaining Seoul campus.

There is an extension campus, which is located in Cheonan, a city in South Chungcheong province, and which sits on the face of hills and a lake. The Cheonan campus includes the largest hospital in the region and one of Korea's top dental programs, as well as the only 4-year Mongolian Language and Literature Department in Korea. The university hosts a student body of about 20,000, and employs an instructional faculty of about 630.

Global Dankook and Mascot

Jukjeon Campus has a bronze bear statue, Yongin

Dankook University's mascot is the black bear. Each campus has a bronze bear statue.

Dankook University was the first private university established after Korea gained independence in 1947. The progressive spirit behind the founding of Dankook University still leads the university today as it continues to rewrite the history of higher education in Korea.

During the past sixty years, Dankook University has endlessly displayed its frontier spirit as it introduced its second campus, and undertook major efforts to become a globalized university.

DKU now features 20 undergraduate colleges and 10 professional graduate schools divided between its new Jukjeon campus, constructed in 2007, and its Cheonan campus.

Both campuses have seen their share of international activity and exposure through DKU’s numerous international exchange programs and are now home to foreign students and faculty from countries such as the United States, China, and the United Kingdom.

The international presence at Dankook continues to grow thanks to its collaborative relationships with more than 90 universities from 30 different countries around the world, including Stockholm University in Sweden, California State University in the USA and La Trobe University in Australia.

These relationships have fostered many successful International Summer Schools Programs, Student Exchanges, and short-term visits abroad which have provided faculty, staff and students with golden opportunities for foreign exposure.

History

Established at Dankook University photos(1947.11.3)(Venue: Seoul Jongro Nakwon 282 Street)

The foundation of Dankook University in 1947, Korea was the victim of Japan and had to suffer under colonial regime. The founder of Dankook University, Mr. Hyoung Chang (later Sir Beomjeong) had to quit his studies unwillingly when he was only 20, which first him to move to Manchuria, where he joined the Korean independence movement in exile.

For the next 34 years, he braved many life threatening dangers[clarification needed] in his long fight towards the independence of his country by working closely with Mr. Kim Ku, who was one of the leading figures in the Korean provisional government.

In 1945, when Korea regained peace and independence, Sir Beomjeong and his partner, Mr. Park Kee-hong (husband of Lady Hyedang Cho), opened a new college.

This is why Dankook University exists to this day. But Mr. Park died before he could witness the establishment of Dankook University on Nov. 3, 1947. With his assets, Sir Beomjeong Chang and Lady Hyedang Cho created Dankook University. Dankook then became the first official four-year private college in Korea.[citation needed]
