Dara-I-Pech district

The Dara-I-Pech district is located western-central part of Kunar Province, Afghanistan, 30 km West from Asadabad. The population is 48,400 (2006). The district is also known as the Manugay district. The governor is Mohammad Rahkman, who governs the district from the district center, which is located on the west side of Nangalam. The district namesake of Manugay(coord|34.9889|N|70.9119|E|) at 1031 m altitude is just north of Nangalam. There are several large capillary valleys, such as the Korengal and Shuryak. There are 13 big villages and most of them are in the valleys of the mountainous district. There has been a timber market. People are generally poor. The farming and the animal husbandry are the main sources of income. The health care and the education need improvement.

The Korengal Valley has been the scene of sustained fighting between U.S. forces and insurgents. The New York Times magazine ran a story by contributing writer Elizabeth Rubin entitled [http://www.nytimes.com/2008/02/24/magazine/24afghanistan-t.html Battle Company Is Out There] on Feb. 24, 2008.
