English Greyhound Derby

English Greyhound Derby

The English Greyhound Derby is the most prestigious race on the UK calendar, with a history stretching back to 1927. Along with the Irish Derby at Shelbourne Park, it is arguably the biggest greyhound competition in the world.

Entry Badge won the first ever running at White City, which was built for the 1908 London Olympics. The Derby was run at the Great Stadium until 1984 when closure resulted in the Classic being moved to Wimbledon Stadium.

Only four greyhounds have won the title two times. Mick The Miller (1929-30), Patricias Hope (1972-73), Rapid Ranger (2000-01) and Westmead Hawk (2005-06).

The competition has been sponsored in 2007 and 2008 by the bookmakers Blue Square, who have the naming rights to the event "The Blue Square Greyhound Derby". The event was previously sponsored by William Hill.
